In the pantheon of legendary British guitarists, Billy Duffy holds a place that is both symbolic and substantial. A cornerstone of the band The Cult, he rose to prominence during the group’s glory days as a true guitar hero. The guitars he played are not only valuable artifacts of British music history, but also offer insight into the playing habits of a powerful and innovative guitarist.
This 1980 Gibson Les Paul Custom is one of the guitars played by Billy Duffy. With its natural maple finish, it stands out thanks to its light-colored top and is instantly recognizable. Billy Duffy was a huge admirer of Mick Ronson. Playing a natural-finish guitar is a clear tribute to his passion for Ronson, who was famously known for his 1968 Les Paul Custom with a sanded-down top.
This guitar comes directly from Duffy’s collection: he played it both on stage and in the studio with The Cult, and more recently with Mike Peters.
This is a guitar with a unique look and a significant place in British music history!
Band: The Cult
Billy Duffy is a British guitarist best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band The Cult, which he co-founded in the 1980s. Known for his powerful playing and memorable riffs, Duffy played a major role in shaping the band’s distinctive sound — a blend of post-punk, hard rock, and gothic influences. Before forming The Cult, he briefly played with Morrissey in a pre-Smiths project.
Outside of The Cult, Duffy has collaborated with various artists and was involved in several side projects, most notably Circus Diablo in the mid-2000s. He has remained active both on stage and in the studio, participating in numerous reunions of The Cult over the decades.
A low-key yet influential figure in British rock, Billy Duffy is today regarded as one of the most respected guitarists of his generation.
