Since 1933 and the custom order of the singing cowboy Gene Autry, the D-45 has been the flagship of the Martin range, the Dreadnought everyone dreams of and that has inspired the greatest. The 91 guitars that were manufactured before the Second World War are extremely sought after, but the very first reissues from 1968 are just as desirable. Moreover, it is estimated that only the first 88 guitars produced in that year received a Brazilian rosewood body, before the brand switched to Indian rosewood. What’s more, when you see the patterns in the Rio rosewood at the back of this superb guitar, it is enough to make it one of the most desirable Dreadnoughts from the venerable brand from Nazareth, Pennsylvania—all periods combined.
To top it all off, these are the famous ‘68 models that won over the Woodstock generation, and in turn made all the songwriters of the ‘70s want to play a Dreadnought. Neil Young’s Old Man was recorded on a D-45, Crosby and Stills each had their own, and even Hendrix had one from that year. There must be a reason...
Like any vintage Martin that is destined to continue making music, this D-45 has been refretted and has benefited from a neck reset. In addition, the bridge pins are not the original ones, but the replacements have aged sufficiently to blend in gracefully with the original bridge. The best possible version of a must-have guitar.
